Questions to ask your vet

A ready-made list for the appointment, so you leave knowing exactly what to do.

Before you go

Vet visits for back pain can be stressful, and it's easy to forget things. Bring any videos you've taken of your dog walking or acting differently, a list of what you've noticed and when, and these questions.

About the diagnosis

  • What do you think is causing this, and how serious is it?
  • Which part of the spine is affected?
  • Does my dog need scans, or a referral to a specialist?

About treatment

  • Can this be treated with rest and medicine, or is surgery a better option?
  • How long does my dog need strict rest, and what is allowed?
  • What does each medicine do, and what side effects should I watch for?
  • Would physiotherapy, rehab or hydrotherapy help, and when can we start?

About what happens next

  • What signs mean I should come back straight away, or go to the emergency vet?
  • When should we have a check-up?
  • What will treatment cost, and what are the options?
  • How can I lower the risk of this happening again?

Write the answers down, or ask if you can record the conversation on your phone.
