Make your home back-safe

Ramps, rugs, harnesses and the right way to pick up a long dog.

Stop the jumping

Jumping on and off furniture puts a sudden load on a long spine. You don't have to ban the couch, just change how they get there.

  • Put ramps or wide, shallow steps at the couch and bed
  • Use a ramp or lift your dog in and out of the car
  • Teach a 'wait' so they don't leap down before you help

Stairs and floors

  • Use baby gates to block stairs when you're not around
  • Add rugs or runners on slippery tiles and floorboards
  • Keep nails trimmed and paw fur tidy for better grip

Pick them up the right way

Never lift a dachshund under the front legs alone, as the back end hangs and the spine bends.

  1. Put one hand under the chest, behind the front legs
  2. Put your other hand under the bottom and back legs
  3. Lift slowly, keeping the back level, and hold them close to your body

Walks and gear

  • Walk on a harness, not a collar, so pulling doesn't jolt the neck
  • Regular, steady walks keep muscles strong and support the spine
  • Go easy on rough play, ball chasing and leaping for toys
